Play and Family Therapy

Play therapy is unique to each child, however the sessions normally begin and end with the family or caregiver(s), with the middle part of the session focusing just on the child.  The first meeting is commonly only with the parent and/or caregiver(s) to gain history.  After two - three sessions with the child, the parent(s) and/or caregiver(s) meet without the child for a treatment planning session.  Sessions can vary from 60-75 minutes, depending on the family system.  For (most) divorced or separated families, expect open communication and the expectation of participation in your child's treatment, unless deemed by the courts to be unsafe, and to work on co-parenting and blended systems.

Family therapy is both collaborative and interactive, with weekly homework.  Each person within the system will be encouraged to have flexible thinking and to enhance their problem solving skills.  Family sessions are 60 to 75 minutes, depending on the family system.

COUPLES COUNSELING

The need for couples counseling is commonly multifaceted, sometimes intertwined within a precipitating event, such as an affair, or an overall sense of “we have just fallen apart”.  As a systems clinician, we will explore the complex systems that fall within your relationship and seeking clarity on what you define as your “communication style, engagement with one another, and your intimacy”.  Utilizing the Gottman Method, goals will include to discover what brought you together, to neutralize conflict and to evolve each other’s individualized level of empathy for repair, reconnection, and growth beyond what brought you into counseling.  For more information on the Gottman Method, please click on the following link:  The Gottman Method - About | The Gottman Institute.

EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an eight-phase treatment that utilizes bilateral stimulation to addresses trauma, or distressing memories, and does not require discussing or describing the event(s).  EMDR therapy facilitates the processes of changing the narrative of the trauma and resolving unprocessed memories.  For more information, please click on the following link:  About EMDR Therapy - EMDR International Association (emdria.org).

Nutritional Health

For clients that desire to “clean up” their nutrition, or see how what they eat, impacts their mood, a nutritional assessment can be incorporated into your treatment plan.  I am a Certified Integrative Mental Health Professional (CIMHP) and would love to explore ways to improve your mental health through perspective dietary and supplement changes.  For eating disordered clients, I commonly refer to a dietician and work collaboratively with them, as well as your primary care physician, to ensure that your eating disorder is being approached safely and within an interdisciplinary team approach.

Women's Health

Women have become one of my favorite populations to work with.  As a wife, mother and aging athlete, I have spent countless hours exploring research on the depth and complexity of issues that are intertwined within the varied roles women play.  From a systems perspective, we will dive into each of these roles, explore how hormones and nutrition play a part within them, and seek to evolve your wellness amongst these varied roles, developing a more balanced “you”.
